EXTENDED PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS

Coverage and mode of operation
All of a customer’s systems are analyzed on the basis of SMF70 – 79 & 89 sentences with our tools. The results and suggestions are documented in PowerPoint. It is displayed with charts including explanations or suggestions.

The result of an analysis is a complete listing and display of all consumptions of the LPAR’s (4 hours medium and actual MSU usage), service classes and resource groups according to actual target achievement ( MSU usage, performance index and number of transactions) and the evaluation of the preset goals with suggestions for a goal adaptation ( per period). Other than that we also check your channels and DASDs regarding to the answering time or IOSQ wait times. This information gives a really good view onto your systems in the end.

Goal
The goal is to check and possibly correct all LPAR’s regarding to the MSU usage and effort. Reasons for performance problems are most of the time wrong settings or wrong interpretations of goals in the operation system. Correcting WLM goals and using WLM resource groups or other software lets z/OS systems run on a consuming-level, which is clearly under the level of a consumer’s imagination.

The investigation
As a result of the investigation the client expects recommendations which

  • Optimize WLM goals
  • Check resource group usage and if necessary correct their application
  • Support the mechanism of fitting report classes and
  • ​Can counteract the MSU increase
The result of the analysis is a complete listing and display of all consumptions of the LPAR’s (4 hours medium and actual MSU usage), service classes and resource groups according to actual target achievement and the evaluation of the preset goals with suggestions for a goal adaptation. With this action the customer receives a comprehensive overview and an evaluation of his complete surrounding and he can use this as a basis for a discussion to make other performance decisions in the future.

The documentation will be made in written form and it will be discussed with the client in one or more presentations; depending on the coverage.

  1. Analysis of SMF-data in two months​
  2. Information about how the Environments are set together and what functions they have
  3. SMF performance analysis through our tools
  4. Analysis results will be imported into our database for further use
  5. Our project co-workers analyze the data and create a broad documentation of the workloads, the service classes and resource groups
  6. We discuss the results with the client and we’ll explain our course of action and the following WLM decisions to the client
  7. We support the client in realizing the WLM goals either in the background or active on the display
  8. Following that are 2 more analyses of the result and if necessary recommendations for more adaptations of the WLM goals
